How I Built a Self-Care Routine That Doesn’t Feel Like a Chore

 Let’s be honest — when I first heard the phrase “self-care routine,” I imagined bubble baths, expensive skincare, and 4am yoga.

Spoiler: I tried that for 2 days and gave up 

So instead, I decided to build a routine that actually felt good to me — not stressful, not expensive, and definitely not something I’d dread.

Here’s how I built a self-care routine that works for my real life:

 1. I Defined What “Care” Actually Meant for Me

Self-care doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s. For me, it wasn’t face masks or green juices.

It was:

  • Saying no to people who drain me

  • Taking breaks without guilt

  • Drinking water

  • Cleaning my space so my brain felt clear

Once I realized that was self-care too, it got easier.


 2. I Picked 3 Simple Things to Do Daily

I stopped trying to do everything. Instead, I picked 3 small things I could do even on bad days:

  1. Make my bed

  2. Step outside for 10 minutes

  3. Eat one real meal (even if it’s just eggs & toast)

Even if my whole day falls apart — those 3 things help me feel grounded.

 3. I Made It Flexible, Not Rigid

Some days I journal. Some days I binge Netflix. Some days I do nothing — and that’s okay.

I stopped trying to “perfect” my routine and just focused on checking in with myself. I ask:

“What do I need today?”
That question changed everything.

 4. I Protect My Peace (Even If It’s Awkward)

If I don’t want to answer messages, I mute them. If a conversation drains me, I end it politely. If I need silence, I take it.

Self-care isn’t just actions — it’s boundaries. And yeah, it was awkward at first. But now it’s my favorite kind of care.

 5. I Celebrate the Little Wins

Did I clean my room? That’s self-care.
Did I go for a walk instead of doom-scrolling? That’s a win.
Did I say “no” to something that made me anxious? Major progress.

Celebrating small steps keeps me going — and makes me want to do more.

Your self-care routine doesn’t need to be perfect. It just needs to make you feel good, safe, and supported.

Start small. Stay kind to yourself. And remember: doing something is always better than doing nothing.
